Friday 30 August is Wear it Purple day 2024
This day is more than just wearing purple—it's about celebrating diversity, promoting inclusion, and standing against bullying and harassment. The theme for Wear it Purple Day 2024 is “Your Passion, Your Pride”.
Wear it Purple Day began in 2010 in response to global stories of teenagers taking their own lives following bullying and harassment due to their sexuality or gender identity. Founded by Katherine Hudson and Scott Williams, the movement aims to foster supportive, safe, and empowering environments for rainbow young people. The day has grown into a significant event, marked by the vibrant display of purple as a symbol of solidarity and support for LGBTQI+ youth.
The Wear it Purple organisation produces resources to support the effective delivery of Wear It Purple Day in schools, universities, workplaces and the broader community.
While Wear it Purple Day is a fantastic starting point, supporting LGBTQI+ individuals should be an ongoing effort. Here are some ways UniSA staff and students can continue to be allies:
Listen and learn: Educate yourself about the challenges faced by LGBTQI+ people and listen to their stories with empathy and an open mind.
Challenge discrimination: Speak out against homophobia, transphobia, and any form of discrimination or inappropriate language. Be an advocate for inclusive policies and practices within our University and into Adelaide University.
Mental health support: Ensure that LGBTQI+ students and staff have access to mental health resources and support services and that they are appropriately promoted.
Wear it Purple Day is a powerful reminder of the importance of acceptance and support for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Let's celebrate this day and ensure our spaces are welcoming and inclusive places for everyone.
